Beside a chair
A reading lamp that does not look like one
Most floor lamps that are good for reading announce it: a jointed arm, a metal cone, a switch on a stalk. This one throws a soft even light from a paper shade at roughly the same height and reads as an object in the corner instead. At 47 in. the glow lands across a chair and the floor around it rather than in a hard circle on the page.
01
Paper, not glass
Light passes through the shade and softens rather than bouncing off it. There is no glare and no hard edge where the light stops, which is what makes a paper lantern easy to sit next to.
02
47 in. tall
Reading height beside a low sofa or an armchair, and tall enough to light a corner rather than only the floor under it.
03
A tripod takes no floor
Three slender legs instead of a weighted disc, so it fits into the corners and gaps where a floor lamp usually has to go.
04
Warm white bulb included
A warm white bulb comes with the lamp, so there is nothing else to order before it lights. The fitting is an E27 screw base, and E27 and the standard US E26 bulb share the same thread, so replacements are easy to find locally.
Unlit, in daylight
It still does something switched off
A floor lamp spends most of the day off, which is usually when it looks worst. A pale ribbed paper shade does not have that problem: in daylight it reads as a quiet sculptural form in the corner, and light coming through a window shows the ribbing as a soft silhouette. That is half of what this shape has always been for.
Questions
What is the shade made of?
Rice paper over a metal frame. That is what gives the lamp its character: the light travels through the paper and diffuses across the whole surface instead of reflecting off a hard shade, so the glow is even and there is no bright spot to look at directly.
Is a bulb included?
Yes. A warm white bulb ships with the lamp, so nothing else has to be ordered before it lights.
What bulb does it take, and can I buy replacements here?
The fitting is an E27 screw base, which is the international size the lamp is built to. The screw base sold in US stores is E26, and E27 and E26 share the same thread and are interchangeable at US voltage. A replacement is therefore whatever warm white screw-base LED your local store carries, with no adapter and no special order.
Why is there only one light color?
Because warm white is the only one that suits the material. A cool or daylight bulb behind rice paper turns the shade grey and flat, and loses the amber cast that makes a paper lantern worth having. We list this lamp in warm white and nothing else rather than offer a choice that would spoil it.
How tall is it?
47 in., or 120 cm. That is reading height beside a low sofa or an armchair, and about the point where a floor lamp starts lighting a corner of a room rather than just the floor beneath it.
Does it need assembling?
Some assembly, yes. The shade and the three tripod legs come apart in the box and go together on site. Once it is built it plugs into a standard wall outlet, so there is no wiring involved.
How do you look after a paper shade?
The same way as any paper lantern. Dust it with a dry soft brush rather than a damp cloth, and keep it out of a bathroom or anywhere else that gets steam. Handled that way a paper shade is far more durable than it looks.
Where does it suit?
Beside a sofa or an armchair in a living room is the obvious place, and a bedroom corner is the next one. It also works on a landing or at the empty end of a console. The form belongs to wabi sabi and Japandi interiors but it is quiet enough not to fight a plain modern room.
How long does delivery take?
Orders are processed within 1 to 7 business days, then delivery to the United States typically takes 8 to 30 business days from dispatch. Shipping is free on every order, with no minimum. We ship direct from the maker rather than through a US warehouse, and tracking is sent the moment it leaves.
